Azusa Sister City Committee
About Us

The Azusa Sister City organization has been in existence for over 40 years. The Azusa Sister City Committee was founded in 1966 with Zacatecas, Mexico as our sister city.  This makes it one of the oldest and the only volunteer organization sanctioned by the City of Azusa.

We are a non-profit organization dedicated to creating and strengthening partnerships and fostering goodwill between the City of Azusa and Zacatecas, Zacatecas, Mexico.  We accomplish this through on going cultural and educational initiatives.

In September a group of Sister City members travel to Zacatecas to celebrate Mexican Independence Day with our sister city.  In October we welcome a delegation from Zacatecas to join us during Azusa’s Golden Days Celebrations.

To help offset the costs of hosting our guests we hold several fundraisers throughout the year.

History

The Town Affiliation Program of People to People was inaugurated in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower as a way for the American people to establish international friendship and understanding.

On October 27, 1964, Hickory S. Jackson presented a report to the Azusa City Council on the procedures to follow if they wished to have a Sister City.

A letter was sent to various organization on November 4, 1964, requesting each to send a representative to a general meeting on January 19, 1965.  At that meeting the group expressed the willingness of their organization to participate.

Councilman Jackson presided at the meeting of February 23, 1965, when Fernando A. Rubio, councilman, was elected chairman of the steering committee, Dave Henley, vice president and Virginia Smith, secretary.

After several attempts to find a city in Mexico interested in entering a Sister City agreement, Zacatecas was selected.  An Azusa delegation, headed by Mr. Rubio, and including Grace Dryden, Ofelia Solis, and Madelyn Tyck, went to Zacatecas in June 1966. Charters were exchanged and Azusa and Zacatecas began what has been a most happy international friendship.
